- Well, it's happening, right now. Read on...

- Yep. You can have many, many telephone lines (doing voice and data and
- video) alongside many, many more video programming lines and pile big
- national network support on top of that.

- In September or October the Federal bill was passed allowing the phone
- companies to provide programming to customers via the current and
- future phone lines. Yes, there were many in the opposition, but it
- passed with the provision that the phone companies could only provide
- some percentage of the total programmming available (like 20% or so).
-
- So, the test cities and projects are already up for the ISDN-based
- programming via fiber, some services are being scheduled for early use
- via "normal" phone lines. Amongst the services that we will see are
- video tapes on demand, re-broadcast of syndicated shows at certain
- times, videotext type services, etc.

- I'm not sure how this would work. The cable companies (who have a
- large stake in the new via-phone services) are working on the
- newly-developed video-by-cable compression techniques that will give
- us around 544 channels over REGULAR cable TV lines by the end of '93.
- These same companies are far and ahead in the interactive (read as
- shop by home) services.
-

- I've strongly advised the video store owners I know to look carefully
- at what's happening and what they need to do to continue profitability
- in the next 5 years and where they will be investing their money when
- they can no longer compete with these new via-phone services.

- Someone is going to makes lots of money in selling/installing the
- hardware needed on the customer end. And the selection-of-services
- software.
