- <discussion about how long before mutual aid is called>
-
- I am a member of a volunteer rescue squad in Richmond, VA. The city of
- Richmond runs (via a contractor) the ambulance service with city limits,
- except that 2 vol. squads have a part of the city as their "first-due".
- We have to meet the same standards as the paid crews: acknowledge the call
- in 30 seconds, be in the rig moving within 60, or they page us again.
- If we don't get in route in 2 minutes, they dispatch another unit to the call.
-
- Technically, this isn't mutual aid; just working within the system. It helps
- that
- a) we always have the crew in quarters or on the unit, never at home
- responding POV
- b) we take great pains to tell the dispatcher when we have a crew and
- when we don't. If they have not been told we have a crew, they
- don't page the station!
-
- In addition, if we don't get to the scene within 9 minutes, we have to
- explain why (but not until later!). They intend to (and do) run a tight ship.
