- Fry's Electronics in the SF Bay Area has a sign by the entrance that
- states that all "electronic merchandise" must be checked before
- entering the store. Since I use a motorcycle as primary
- transportation, I carry a fanny-pack that contains my HP48SX and my
- Motorola MicroTac. I routinely carry this pack on into the store
- (ignoring the very silly sign) since I frequently have need of both the
- calculator (for last minute design changes) and the cellular phone (for
- consultations) when on the sales floor.
-
- On a number of occasions, I have been accosted upon entry by people who
- want to search my fanny-pack. When they discover the electronic items,
- I am instructed to leave them. I offer them a choice: I keep them and
- shop or I turn around and walk out. At that point I am given a slip of
- paper that lists the items to "show upon exit". On one occasion, I was
- stopped at the exit for "fanny-pack search" and my items were
- discovered--and I did not have any "papers". A small scene erupted
- where I was all but accused of stealing the items.
-
- "We need to see receipts for the cellular phone and the calculator." My
- reply: "You need to accuse me of stealing these items of personal
- property or get out of my face. Now!" A short mini-conference of
- security wannabees was held, and it was decided that I would be let go
- with a stern "warning".
-
- A number of us have written to Fry's about this stupid policy (not to
- mention the press the store received on the net) and things seemed to
- be a little more relaxed. After all, it is not outrageous that people
- from the Silicon Valley would carry personal electronic items into a
- store. Any business that treats its customers like criminals deserves to
- go out of business.
