  12. My husband & I recently got a strange message on our
  13. answering machine from someone allegedly from the
  14. "Franchise Tax Board".  She said something like "This call
  15. is for Ron and Emy Musick.  We are trying to locate a
  16. neighbor of yours, a Mr. xxx (forgot).  Please call us
  17. back @ (916)xxx-xxxx"

  19. The Franchise Tax Board (I think) processes the state
  20. income tax forms & stuff.  Now, supposing that this 
  21. woman is really from the Tax Board, one would assume
  22. she plucked our names from our state tax forms, right?
  23. Well, my husband's formal name is Charles R. Musick, Jr.,
  24. and that's how it's listed on our tax forms.  The way
  25. the lady addressed us makes me think she picked our names
  26. out of the phone book (that's how we're listed in the phone
  27. book, because Ron is his nickname).   There's no way she
  28. could have deduced that the middle initial "R" meant Ron.

  30. Also, why didn't the lady just call the apt. manager.  I'm
  31. sure they'd know a lot more about a tenant of theirs than
  32. some "neighbor" (neither of us recognized the name of the
  33. alledged neighbor).  FYI, we live in a large apt. complex.

  35. In addition, (916) is a long distance number.  Why would
  36. I pay long distance rates to help them locate someone I had
  37. no clue about?  I think 916 IS the area code of Sacramento,
  38. though, where the Franchise Board is located.  But that doesn't
  39. really mean much.

  41. My question is: has anyone else ever gotten a weird call like
  42. this?  I'll probably call just too see what this is all about,
  43. but unfortunately, I think the message got overwritten by other
  44. messages on the answering machine.  I REALLY hope this isn't
  45. some new telemarketing gimmick relating to helping you fill out
  46. your taxes for a fee or investigating if you qualify for "unclaimed 
  47. taxes" for a fee.  I'd be most upset if I pay long distance
  48. charges to hear a telemarketing spiel. 8-(.
