  25. Salvadoran Army Officers Charge Human Rights Violations
  26.  
  27. The two top officers in the Chiefs of Staff of the
  28. Salvadoran army, Generals Gilberto Rubio and Mauricio Vargas, on
  29. January 21 accused two Salvadoran organizations of having
  30. committed human rights abuses. They presented before the courts
  31. complaints against the leaders of the Salvadoran National Workers
  32. Union (UNTS), a labor union, and the non-governmental Salvadoran
  33. Human Rights Commission (CDHES). The organizations had published
  34. ads in a local newspaper with the names of over 200 officiers
  35. they accused of having committed political crimes. The two
  36. organizations demanded that President Alfredo Cristiani apply the
  37. recommendations made by a special commission to purge the army,
  38. in accordance with the peace agreements signed in January 1992.
