- Salvadoran Army Officers Charge Human Rights Violations
-
- The two top officers in the Chiefs of Staff of the
- Salvadoran army, Generals Gilberto Rubio and Mauricio Vargas, on
- January 21 accused two Salvadoran organizations of having
- committed human rights abuses. They presented before the courts
- complaints against the leaders of the Salvadoran National Workers
- Union (UNTS), a labor union, and the non-governmental Salvadoran
- Human Rights Commission (CDHES). The organizations had published
- ads in a local newspaper with the names of over 200 officiers
- they accused of having committed political crimes. The two
- organizations demanded that President Alfredo Cristiani apply the
- recommendations made by a special commission to purge the army,
- in accordance with the peace agreements signed in January 1992.
