  29.        On February 2, the Embassy of Israel is hosting a reception commemo-
  30.        rating  the  work of  Dr, Martin  Luther King,  Jr. Dr.  Benjamin L.
  31.        Hooks, Executive  Director of the NAACP, and Judith Lichtman, Presi-
  32.        dent of the  Women's Legal Defense Fund, will  be presented with the
  33.        1993 Civil Rights Award by none other than the government of Israel.

  35.        In light of  Israel's expulsion of over 400 Palestinians  to a moun-
  36.        taintop in southern Lebanon in the dead of winter, such a commemora-
  37.        tion is not  only inappropriate, but  degrades the good name  of Dr.
  38.        King  and the  movement  he led.  Dr.  King, one  of  this century's
  39.        greatest human rights  advocates, should not  be associated with  an
  40.        apartheid regime like Israel. As South Africa's closest ally, Israel
  41.        is in  no position to commemorate  the life of the  great Dr. Martin
  42.        Luther King, Jr.
