- UNPO 3RD GENERAL ASSEMBLY DAILY PRESS RELEASE
-
- THURSDAY 21 JANUARY 1993
-
- *SHELL ACCUSED OF WAGING ECOLOGICAL WAR ON THE OGONI NATION*
-
- The Ogoni Nation was accepted as a member of the Unrepresented
- Nations and Peoples Organization during the opening session of
- the third General Assembly of the UNPO.
-
- Mr. Ken Saro Wiwa, representative of the Ogoni people and
- chairman of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People
- (MOSOP), in his address to the General Assembly, accused Shell
- and Chevron of waging a deadly ecological war on the Ogoni people
- by exploiting Ogoni oil resources without any consideration for
- the environment.
-
- Mr Saro Wiwa said during the Assembly:
- "Today, Ogoni is a wasteland. Unfortunately the international
- community has not awakened fully to the grim nature of this
- highly sophisticated if unconventional war being waged by very
- powerful multinationals against a defenseless people and their
- environment."
-
- IN DECEMBER 1992 THE OGONI NATION SENT A DEMAND NOTICE TO SHELL
- AND CHEVRON ASKING THEM TO END THE ECOLOGICAL WAR.SHELL FAILED TO
- ANSWER THE LETTER AND SOUGHT THE PROTECTION OF THE MILITARY
- GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA. FOLLOWING THAT THE OGONI STAGED A MASS
- DEMONSTRATION ON JANUARY 4TH 1993 TO PROTEST AGAINST THE
- POLITICAL OPPRESSION THEY SUFFER IN THE HANDS OF THE NIGERIAN
- GOVERNMENT AND THE ECOLOGICAL DEVASTATION CAUSED BY SHELL AND
- CHEVRON.
- SHOCKED BY THE OVERWHELMING SUPPORT FOR THE DEMONSTRATION, THE
- NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT INVITED THE ORGANIZERS, INCLUDING MR. SARO
- WIWA, TO THE CAPITAL. THE GOVERNMENT SAID IT WAS WILLING TO
- INVESTIGATE THE COMPLAINTS BUT NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN SO FAR/
- MOSOP IS CURRENTLY PLANNING A NON-VIOLENT CAMPAIGN FOR SELF
- DETERMINATION FOR THE OGONI PEOPLE.
-
- The Ogoni people live in the north east of the Niger delta in the
- south of Nigeria and number 500.000 people.
-
- A 20 MINUTE DOCUMENTARY COVERING THE DEMONSTRATION AND THE
- ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION IS AVAILABLE AT REQUEST FROM MR. SARO
- WIWA WHO IS NOW IN THE NETHERLANDS ATTENDING THE UNPO MEETING.
