  32. *SHELL ACCUSED OF WAGING ECOLOGICAL WAR ON THE OGONI NATION*

  34. The Ogoni Nation was accepted as a member of the Unrepresented
  35. Nations and Peoples Organization during the opening session of
  36. the third General Assembly of the UNPO.
  37.  
  38. Mr. Ken Saro Wiwa, representative of the Ogoni people and
  39. chairman of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People
  40. (MOSOP), in his address to the General Assembly, accused Shell
  41. and Chevron of waging a deadly ecological war on the Ogoni people
  42. by exploiting Ogoni oil resources without any consideration for
  43. the environment.

  45. Mr Saro Wiwa said during the Assembly:
  46. "Today, Ogoni is a wasteland. Unfortunately the international
  47. community has not awakened fully to the grim nature of this
  48. highly sophisticated if unconventional war being waged by very
  49. powerful multinationals against a defenseless people and their
  50. environment."

  52. IN DECEMBER 1992 THE OGONI NATION SENT A DEMAND NOTICE TO SHELL
  53. AND CHEVRON ASKING THEM TO END THE ECOLOGICAL WAR.SHELL FAILED TO
  54. ANSWER THE LETTER AND SOUGHT THE PROTECTION OF THE MILITARY
  55. GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA. FOLLOWING THAT THE OGONI STAGED A MASS
  56. DEMONSTRATION ON JANUARY 4TH 1993 TO PROTEST AGAINST THE
  57. POLITICAL OPPRESSION THEY SUFFER IN THE HANDS OF THE NIGERIAN
  58. GOVERNMENT AND THE ECOLOGICAL DEVASTATION CAUSED BY SHELL AND
  59. CHEVRON.
  60. SHOCKED BY THE OVERWHELMING SUPPORT FOR THE DEMONSTRATION, THE
  61. NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT INVITED THE ORGANIZERS, INCLUDING MR. SARO
  62. WIWA, TO THE CAPITAL. THE GOVERNMENT SAID IT WAS WILLING TO
  63. INVESTIGATE THE COMPLAINTS BUT NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN SO FAR/
  64. MOSOP IS CURRENTLY PLANNING A NON-VIOLENT CAMPAIGN FOR SELF
  65. DETERMINATION FOR THE OGONI PEOPLE.

  68. south of Nigeria and number 500.000 people.
