- CHRISTIAN PEACEMAKER TEAMS
-
- January 14, 1992
-
- Dear Haiti supporters,
-
- We write to you from Miami - a city struggling over the plight of Haitian
- immigrants looking for safety from the high seas and from a brutal
- government. We are eager to bring greetings from this city where so many
- have suffered hurricane disaster, but where our churches are finding new
- important ways to witness.
-
- The CPT release posted elsewhere describes the work of a ten person
- Christian Peacemaker Team which arrived in Miami on January 9 and is
- staying throughout the week, and perhaps longer, to lend assistance to the
- struggle for the rights of Haitians.
-
- The Miami news media is FULL of information about the injustices
- which abound as a result of the policies of Immigration and Naturalization
- Services (INS) and within the detention centers themselves. We need your
- help to spread the word about the violence here and within the current
- military government in Haiti. Only three weeks ago we wrote to you from
- Haiti describing the suffering there and offering ways for you to respond.
-
- Please send inaugural greetings this week to President Bill Clinton and
- congress. REQUEST THE RELEASE OF HAITIAN REFUGEES FROM MIAMI DETENTION
- CENTERS AND A FAIR CHANCE FOR POLITICAL ASYLUM. Only today we have learned
- that new initiatives are on the horizon with respect to Haitian policy.
- Given the push of worldwide matters your work will help prevent a permanent
- solution to this from being marginalized. URGE CONGRESS TO INSIST
- HIGHEST LEVEL DIPLOMATIC INITIATIVES TO RETURN DEMOCRACY IN HAITI. Concerns
- can also be expressed through the White House Comment Desk (202) 456-1111.
-
- With this letter we are also announcing an upcoming trip to Haiti for
- March 20 - 31. Please pass along this information and contact us if you
- are interested in participating.
-
- Finally our team encourages you to integrate this matter into the life,
- prayer and worship of your congregation's life, remembering that most of
- our forbearers came to North American as sojourners, as boat people.
-
- Sincerely,
-
-
- Gene Stoltzfus
