  38. I am glad I supported you, glad I voted for you, and absolutely
  39. delighted that you won!  Congratulations!  I wish you stamina and
  40. wisdom, and every possible lucky break!

  42. Last year the Senate showed unusual courage and cut off military aid to
  43. Indonesia, a nation which invaded its peaceful, democratic neighbor
  44. East Timor in 1975 and continues today to illegally occupy East Timor
  45. and torture, kidnap, rape, maim, and murder great numbers of East
  46. Timorese.  We can say "they have human rights problems" but that
  47. euphemism does not convey the true sense of the situation.  Human
  48. rights observers estimate a third of the Timorese population has been
  49. killed since 1975.  This is an intentional genocide and US taxpayers
  50. provide the means.

  52. The United States should cut off ALL aid to Indonesia until it
  53. withdraws all its forces from East Timor.  We cannot afford to be
  54. propping up Indonesia's murderous dictatorship with "development aid"
  55. which simply frees funds for the Indonesian military.  Indonesia can
  56. be seen as a test of whether the United States truly opposes "naked
  57. aggression" and supports democracy and self-determination, or not.
  58. Please tell me what you intend to do about US aid to Indonesia.
