- I believed it because the costs were the same as those published in the
- Consumer's Guide New Car Price Book, as well as several other
- publications. Check in any bookstore. Even if there has been a factory
- price increase since the book was published, this gives you a better
- place to start negotiating than the window sticker.
-
- I also read a book written by a former car salesman. I think it was
- "How to Buy a Car" or something like that, by, uh, James Robinson? It
- was informative. It warned not to be convinced by invoices alone -
- unscrupulous dealers (oxymoron?) can fake them. Anyone with a laser
- printer could fake the invoice I saw, but the independent prices were
- what I was working from anyway.
-
- My negotiating technique in this case was simple - take dealer cost, add
- a fair (IMHO) profit, tell the dealer how I arrived at the figure, and
- offer to buy. If they don't take it, walk away.
-
- Of course, I've only bought 2 new cars in my life, so what do I know?
