  12. [ Although I urgently need help concerning gcc, I've a feeling that
  13.   this message doesn't quite belong in gnu.gcc.help; I apologise if
  14.   it is inappropriate. ]

  16. I want to use gcc and friends as a cross environment running on SPARC
  17. SVR4 machines to produce code for m68k based peripheral controller
  18. cards. We have prototyped this very successfully - my thanks to the
  19. many GNU contributors. I now need to justify my recommendation of
  20. the GNU software to my management.
  21.  
  22. Within the next day or so I need to get together a list of "good
  23. things" about the GNU C development tools which will convince people 
  24. that they are robust enough, reliable enough, and of high-enough
  25. quality to use in the building of major commercial products. The sorts
  26. of things I'm after are:
  27.  
  28.  - names of commercial organisations who use gcc to produce software
  29.    products (especially large companies, and systems software); I'm
  30.    aware that Dell and NeXT use gcc to produce their UNIX operating
  31.    systems, and release it as their compilation system.
  32.  
  33.  - benchmark comparisons of object code produced by gcc and other
  34.    compilers (especially for m68k family, especially systems software;
  35.    my main criterion is the performance of the produced program -
  36.    compilation times, and so on, are of little consequence).
  37.  
  38.  - recommendations for commercial organisations who provide support
  39.    for GNU users. I'm aware of Cygnus Support - are there others
  40.    similar? Anyone with good stories to tell of the quality of support
  41.    offered?
  42.  
  43.  - experience from people who've used the GNU tools as a cross-build
  44.    system, especially targeting m68k, even better if run on SPARC,
  45.    and better still if running under SVR4!
  46.  
  47.  - anything else I haven't thought of which might be useful!

  49. I need to get this together very quickly, so fast responses would be
  50. greatly appreciated - a short reply as soon as you read this will
  51. probably be of more use to me than a longer one later. Please reply
