- Senior Advanced Development Engineer
- ------------------------------------
-
- The OSF RI has an opening in the Operating Systems Advanced
- Development Group. The work will be with the OSF/1 MK Operating
- System architecture, a set of operating system services running as
- servers on the Mach 3 microkernel.
-
- This architecture has already been, or is being, ported to a number
- of hardware platforms, including intel 486, MIPS, HP-PA, DEC Alpha
- and IBM RS6000, both for uniprocessors and multiprocessors. A
- version of OSF/1 MK has also been developed for multicomputers,
- that is massively parallel machines, with potentially thousands
- of processors connected by a fast interconnect and using no shared
- memory.
-
- The experience with multicomputers is now being extended to
- workstation clusters. This work will involve architectural studies
- and performance analysis, followed by prototyping and implementation,
- of a cluster operating system, based on OSF/1 MK, and including
- the following aspects:
-
- o client/server architecture
- o single system image on clusters of machines
- o distribution of services
-
- Development is done in collaboration with academic and industrial
- research organizations who are experimenting with our technology
- by porting innovative software systems to them, such as an
- object-oriented platform for distributed applications.
-
- Responsibilities of the job include:
-
- o understanding current OSF technologies, in particular OSF/1 MK
- and DCE
- o analysing the system's performance characteristics
- o identifying architectural performance problems and developing
- solutions
- o working with a team designing an architecture for networked
- clusters based on OSF/1 MK and available technology from
- industrial and academic research groups
- o implementing a distributed single system OSF/1 MK image on a
- networked cluster
- o evaluating kernel services to contribute to the evolution of
- Mach 3
-
- Presentation and publication of technical results at conferences
- and specialized workshops is an important part of the job. The
- candidate should be able to defend his/her technical ideas within
- a dynamic and opinionated team. The working environment is English
- and fluency in English is essential.
-
- A successful candidate will have the following;
-
- o BS degree or beyond preferably in Computer Science
- o Fluency in C is required.
- o 2 to 5 years UNIX kernel experience (BSD, System V or other)
- o Knowledge of advanced kernels such as Mach, or other similar
- technologies, is desirable.
- o Familiarity with distributed file systems is a plus.
- o Good communication skills and fluency in English
- o Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work in teams
- o Good organizational skills and attention to detail are necessary.
