  22. What may be happening here is that the 2 major wings of the Republican
  23. Party - the neo-conservative fundamentalist right wing,  and the older
  24. establishment country club wing;  are trying to differentiate themselves
  25. from the other in order to lay early claim on control of the party 
  26. in preparation for the next presidential election.

  28. Since their convention demonstrated the stranglehold that some of the
  29. more extreme elements have on the GOP,  an effort has been underway
  30. the by the moderates to establish an orginaization within the party
  31. that can find solutions for the countrys' ills without dragging the
  32. discussion down into the morass of socially divisive issues that have
  33. plagued them recently.    Possibly this group would function the same
  34. as the Democrats own DLC (Democratic Leadership Council), of which Bill
  35. Clinton is a product.  The DLC focussed the democrats onto moderate
  36. centrist themes of great interest to the majority of americans, rather
  37. than allow the divisive leftist policies of the liberal wing drag the
  38. party down to another presidential defeat.
