- :I have ordered a 170-meg disk to replace an ailing 110-meg device, and have
- :some questions about backing the whole thing up. As tape isn't available, I
- :am considering backing up the critical directories to the /u filesystem,
- :installing the new disk, and then moving the backup files back to the new
- :disk and rebooting.
-
- :I can use tar to move the files, and to restore them. However, if I do this,
- :tar will likely copy some stuff I don't want it to copy, particularly any
- :files relating to the new disk.
-
- SCO's tar also won't back up anything but files leaving your
- devices and empty directories on the old system, but not on the
- new one.
-
- :What I need to know is which files specifically relate to booting the new
- :disk, so I can delete them from the backup archives before restoring those
- :archives back to that disk.
-
- The best program I've found for this is CTAR. It allows you to
- make boot and file restore floppies that give you the capability
- to boot off floppy, initialize the new hard disk changing
- partitions sizes and swap space as necessary, and load the system
- from tape or floppies. CTAR is also extremely robust in it's
- error recovery capabilities. It handles devices and empty
- directories properly too.
-
- :Any suggestions (using cpio to move the files instead of tar, for instance)
- :would be appreciated, as I don't want to risk losing the existing devices or
- :the /u filesystem through errors on my part.
-
- Cpio, afio, pax, gtar... all are better choices than SCO tar
- since they preserve devices and empty directories.
-
- :To reiterate: I want to backup the boot disk to /u, install a new boot disk
- :with different parameters, then restore everything from /u ..
-
- To reiterate: CTAR is the best solution I've found.
