- Does anyone know if any of the standard DEC software provided with
- Ultrix "4,2C" (i.e., 4.2A upgraded with OSF/Motif 1.1.3) can selectively
- print pages from postscript files? Of course, format-control options
- would also be nice. If the answer is a definitive "not possible", then
- I might be interested in other public software.
-
- Some background:
- (1) I've noticed that the options box presented when one selects "Print
- Portion of Screen" from the Session Manager's Print Screen menu
- includes choices for a range of pages. Since this facility seems
- irrelevant to the "Print Portion of Screen" function, it occurred
- to me that there was perhaps somewhere some more useful utility
- which could make use of this information. Note: I'm interested
- in doing my printing on third-party printers, so the various lpr
- options available on DEC printers don't help.
- (2) The CDA Viewer provides nice facilities to look at individual pages of
- a postscript file, and to control various presentation features. Now,
- if only one could print from there! But I could find no facility (or
- mention in Help) for printing. [By the way, I previously had great
- difficulty in using the Postscript Previewer on my 5000/200 PXG, even
- with the required WatchProgress set. I would get crashes on up to half
- of my attempts to look at long files. But the CDA Viewer seems quite
- quite at least based upon limited usage so far - no such problems.]
-
- To anticipate some questions in response:
- - Why do I want to do this? To select modified portions of a long file;
- if a printer cannot handle a long file all at once; to separate out
- a few color pages from an otherwise black-and-white document; etc.
- - No, I don't think using "Print Portion of Screen" on a CDA-displayed
- page helps; it would cost resolution, doesn't allow for the vertical
- scroll bars, and (so far as I can tell) only gives black-and-white.
- - Yes, I could edit the postscript file to do what I want; but there
- must surely be a better way....
- Thanks, Al Eisner
