  25. This is documented in the "Ex Reference Manual" by Joy and Horton. In
  26. Version 3.7 (which belongs to the 4.3 BSD) it reads in section 7
  27. (Command descriptions):

  30.     Add the named abbreviation to the current list. When in input mode
  31.     in visual, if word is typed as a complete word, it will be changed
  32.     to rhs.
