- Greetings,
-
- We recently took shipment of 6 RS6000/560s each with FDDI Single Ring
- Cards in them. These machines run AIX 3.2.2. Acting on early
- information, a series of cables were ordered that had FDDI flat
- connectors on one end and a pair of ST connectors on the other. The
- idea was that you could create a passive ring by wiring the transmit
- side of one into the receive side of it's neighbor and form a large
- daisy chain. I can't get this to work.
-
- A support person from IBM Austin told me that the only two plausable
- (supported?) configurations were:
-
- 1. Attaching all 6 machines to an intelligent hub.
- 2. Purchasing the FDDI Dual Ring Upgrade Kit which is
- purported to have a second FDDI flat connector bulkhead
- on it. (And producing an FDDI <--> FDDI cable to
- daisy chain the machines)
-
- Our local sales rep. received information conflicting information
- from AIX Systems Support that suggested the passive ring WOULD
- work. Their solution looked logically just like mine but involved
- a whole collection of IBM parts in lieu of the custom cables we
- had made.
-
- Sooo.....
-
- What's the story? Does anyone have an FDDI ring made up of RS/6000s
- that resembles any of these? I've fallen into a chasm of conflicting
- information (and can't get up??). Any help and/or war stories would
- be appreciated.
