- I have the following problem(s) that I need some help/advice on:
-
- The SCO UNIX system where I work just bit the big one and I was the lucky one
- appointed to restore it. Just about everything that could have gone wrong did.
-
- The system of backups was a joke (the management was too cheap to buy enough
- tapes to do the grandfather-father-son method) so we don't really have a
- complete backup. The system was already in place when I went to work there a
- couple of months ago, and I tried to get them to buy enough tapes, but no
- luck...now maybe they'll learn! :-)
-
- Anyway, here are my questions:
-
- 1) The backups that we do have were created with 'cpio' on older tapes (QIC-80)
- that have errors and I can't read all of the tape.
-
- Question: Is there any way to have cpio skip past the errors (other than the -k
- option) or start reading in the middle of a series of tapes?
-
- 2) Some backups were made with 'tar' and suffer from same problem as above
-
- Question: Can I make tar skip to the next available file in the tar archive on
- the tape?
-
- 3) I was able to get some of the data off the drive last nite before I
- reinstalled the system. I used the command 'cpio -ocv -C 1024 -I /dev/rctmini
- -M 72000' to do the backup, but the first tape that I used wasn't a 80 meg, it
- was a 40, so I can only read the first tape of the three I made.
-
- Question: Is there anyway to read the rest of the tapes of that series?
-
- Thanks for any suggestions offered!
