  4. Subject: Errors on SCO UNIX v3.2.4 reading tapes

  12. I have the following problem(s) that I need some help/advice on:

  14. The SCO UNIX system where I work just bit the big one and I was the lucky one  
  15. appointed to restore it.  Just about everything that could have gone wrong did.
  16.  
  17. The system of backups was a joke (the management was too cheap to buy enough  
  18. tapes to do the grandfather-father-son method) so we don't really have a  
  19. complete backup.  The system was already in place when I went to work there a  
  20. couple of months ago, and I tried to get them to buy enough tapes, but no  
  21. luck...now maybe they'll learn! :-)

  23. Anyway, here are my questions:

  25. 1) The backups that we do have were created with 'cpio' on older tapes (QIC-80)  
  26. that have errors and I can't read all of the tape.
  27.  
  28. Question: Is there any way to have cpio skip past the errors (other than the -k  
  29. option) or start reading in the middle of a series of tapes?
  30.  
  31. 2) Some backups were made with 'tar' and suffer from same problem as above
  32.  
  33. Question: Can I make tar skip to the next available file in the tar archive on  
  34. the tape?
  35.  
  36. 3) I was able to get some of the data off the drive last nite before I  
  37. reinstalled the system.  I used the command 'cpio -ocv -C 1024 -I /dev/rctmini  
  38. -M 72000' to do the backup, but the first tape that I used wasn't a 80 meg, it  
  39. was a 40, so I can only read the first tape of the three I made.

  41. Question: Is there anyway to read the rest of the tapes of that series?
