- This brings up the issue of username length. What is the real standard and
- why?
- Is it really 8 characters only. Under Ultrix I cannot login (via telnet or
- rlogin) but I can ftp into an account with a username longer than 8 chars.
- I don't have any problem using more than 8 under Irix. A/UX warns that you
- may have trouble with rlogin if more than 8 chars are used. The Sun OS
- seems
- to allow them also without apparent problem.
- I ahve looked through about a dozen books about Unix design and
- Administration
- but have found no guidance. Can anyone give me a definitive answer?
- Also how about password length and hostname length?
- Any useful response will be appreciated, thanks.
- Later...Dave.
