- Here are answers for my two refer questions (of course there are more
- other ways).

- 1. refer with abbreviation when numbering is used.

- I have found that grefer (GNU verison of refer) does what I
- want. You can set a command to turn the abbreviation on. And
- it has much more features than refer.

- I was alos told that bib can do it too.

- 2. troff file with a line starting with ".".

- Add "\&" in front of . this way this line is not considered
- as troff command line and since "\&" is a zero length
- non-printable character, you are ok.
