- Hi Folks,
-
- One of my clients, a popular magazine specializing in personal computers,
- has decided to 'review the current state of the workstation world'.
-
- It looks like they will be supplied with the following low to mid-range
- boxes:
-
- IBM RS6000/320h
- SGI Indigo
- HP 9000/720
- Sun ???
-
- Thankfully, they have decided not to compare apples and oranges, and
- won't be trying to choose the 'Best workstation' from the lot.
-
- I would like to solicit opinions as to what would be a good way to
- compare the various strengths and weakness of these machines.
-
- For example, my particular area of interest is floating point performance
- as used in modeling and scientific applications. Tests on my model 320
- RS6000, which is a great performer in single user mode, show that it's
- floating point performance is seriously impacted under multitasking loads.
- I aim to see if this is equally true of the other RISC machines.
-
- What might be a fair way to compare video performance... disk access
- and throughput speed... general user friendliness and suitability for
- different apps... might it be interesting to also evaluate a high end PC
- running Unix ?
-
- Your input would help us offer a subjective review consisting of more
- than the usual spec/mips number wars. If you would email me any thoughts
- you have on the subject I would be happy to post a summary and keep you
- posted on the progress of the evaluation.
