- : What? SHEESH! That sounds almost like illegal price add-ons.
-
- Not at all. Pricing structures that make sense for individuals buying
- individual software for individual machines don't necessarily make
- sense for large sites buying site licenses for software on dozens or
- hundreds of machines. Sun's pricing structure fills a need that is
- fairly common at larger sun sites.
-
- We have a software upgrade agreement with Sun that lets us run the
- latest OS release on all of our several hundred Sun systems. We don't
- need any RTUs...we have those.
-
- What we DO want is more OS disks than our agreement provides
- automatically. So Sun provides us with the ability to buy the disks we
- need without paying for the OS license that we DON'T need. I'd be
- pissed if Sun made us pay for an RTU just to get the media.
-
- The fact that Suns don't ship by default with a full set of
- documentation makes a similar kind of sense (imagine the number of
- trees it would take to provide us with a doc set for each of our 300+
- systems :-).
-
- This media separate from RTU pricing structure is fairly common for
- companies that sell site or network licensed software to large sites on
- a regular basis.
