  22. Solution for NeXTSTEP Color Publishing

  24. LARKSPUR, Calif. - Goldleaf Publishing announced the release of
  25. eXTRASCAN, a scanner driver software package for use
  26. with Epson GT-series scanners and any computer running NeXTSTEP.
  27.  
  28. eXTRASCAN fills a unique niche in the NeXT market, because it is very
  29. fast and because it fully exploits every hardware option available on
  30. the Epson scanners. Additionally, all of the scanner specific
  31. hardware functions are performed while scanning the image, rather
  32. than after the image has been captured. Hardware features include
  33. color correction, gamma correction, and halftone screening. The
  34. hardware screening function is especially noteworthy because it lets
  35. users produce superior halftones on the NeXT laser printer. By using
  36. the scanner's hardware based corrections, eXTRASCAN is able to
  37. achieve the maximum scan quality of an image with no loss of speed.
  38. eXTRASCAN is also the only scanner driver currently available for
  39. NeXTSTEP that automatically supports the Epson GT-8000 scanner (which
  40. is available in Europe and will be available in the United States
  41. shortly). This is an important development for NeXT users because the
  42. GT-8000 offers custom hardware gamma correction and hardware image
  43. sharpening. The GT-8000 also offers a transparency scanning option,
  44. which is perfect for transparencies, X-rays, and other non-reflective
  45. media.

  47. eXTRASCAN has a very elegant and simple user interface. Upon startup,
  48. eXTRASCAN opens only two panels, the main scan panel and the extended
  49. settings panel. The user can control all hardware features with the
  50. options available on these two panels.

  52. eXTRASCAN saves in TIFF and EPS file formats, and supports the JPEG,
  53. LZW, and PackBits compression methods. The program can also be called
  54. by other applications through the NeXTSTEP Services menu.

  56. Goldleaf sells eXTRASCAN as either a standalone product with a
  57. suggested list price of $XXX, or bundled with an Epson GT-6000
  58. scanner for a suggested list price of approximately $XXX.
