  13.  
  14. Firstly, thanks for all who have contributed their suggestions to improve
  15. Desktop v1.5 is now due for release.  Although Desktop v1.1 provides 
  16. virtual screens, free form dock and advanced features to support the concepts
  17. of virtual screen and free form dock, there is still room for improvement.  
  18. So, Desktop v1.5 is released as a compilation of new ideas contributed by a
  19. few NeXT users and myself.  
  20.  
  21. All the functions of Desktop v1.5 are fully enabled for a period of time so
  22. that NeXT users have a chance to see how helpful Desktop can be and where it
  23. stands when compared to product like Virtspace 3.0.
  24.  
  25. Below are the features of Desktop v1.0, Desktop v1.1 and Desktop v1.5
  26.  
  27. Features of Desktop v1.0 
  28. ========================
  29. -  Desktop provides four virtual screens with one being the active screen 
  30. at any one time.
  31.  
  32. -  Desktop automatically switches from the current screen to the correct
  33. virtual screen that contains the window that you need.  Alternatively, you
  34. can ask Desktop to move that window to your current screen instead.
  35.  
  36. -  Desktop offers a number of operations on any window, eg. floating a
  37. window so that the window will always appear in the active screen, raising a
  38. window, sending a window to any of the virtual screens etc.
  39.  
  40. -  Besides window management, Desktop also manages the application icons
  41. that are created by Workspace when you launch any application.  These
  42. application icons can become misaligned or buried under other windows
  43. sometimes.  With Desktop, you can tidy the icons, hide them, unhide them or
  44. place them in front of other windows etc.
  45.         
  46. -  Desktop offers its free-form dock that can be comprised of application
  47. icons, folder icons and even data file icons.  In fact, the dock can be made
  48. up of just any type of icons that appear in the file browser.  The status of
  49. each Desktop dock icon is reflected by the three little dots just like any
  50. NeXT dock icon (this is applicable to application icons only).  For other
  51. types of Desktop icons, eg.  directory icon, a big dot appears on the lower
  52. left corner instead of the three dots to indicate that Desktop will not keep
  53. track of the status for this icon.  Of course, the user-customizable Desktop
  54. dock can be edited and saved for future Desktop session.
  55.     
  56. -  Desktop offers a new input method like that of a X-window manager.
  57. Desktop has the miniaturization of the four virtual sceens in the Desktop
  58. Window.  However, this does not mean that whenever you need to perform an
  59. operation on a window eg. to move a window from one screen to another, you
  60. have to drag the miniature view of that window in the Desktop Window.  This
  61. can be inconvenient.
  62.         
  63. Instead, just move the mouse to the window (the actual window, not the
  64. miniature view).  Then hold down the "Alternate" key first before moving the
  65. mouse.  The WindowOp/NeXTApp Icon/Desktop Icon submenu will pop up depending
  66. on whether the window is really a normal window, a NeXT app icon or a Desktop
  67. icon.  You can then pick the desired operation from the menu.

  69. -  If the machine workload is heavy, adjust the refresh rate accordingly or
  70. even turn it off.  Click on the Update button at the Desktop window to
  71. manually update the display of the windows.

  74. Features of Desktop v1.1
  75. ========================
  76. In addition to the above-mentioned features, Desktop1.1 has the following new
  77. features:
  78.  
  79. -  Desktop 1.1 consumes little CPU power, yet peforms operations faster than
  80. Desktop 1.0.
  81.  
  82. - Auto Flip Screen feature for automatically switching to the correct
  83. screen when you drag a window beyond the boundary of the active screen.  This
  84. feature can be conveniently disabled for individual window-dragging sessions
  85. if necessary.

  87. -  2 new icon features:
  88.    i) Auto-tidy icons for aligning icons neatly at the bottom of the
  89. screen at all times.
  90.    ii) Group icons for grouping icons by application that owns these
  91. icons.
  92.  
  93. -   Popup submenu can be disabled if it causes interference by other
  94. programs.

  96. Features of Desktop v1.5
  97. ========================
  98. In addition to the above-mentioned features, Desktop v1.5 has the following
  99. new features:
  100.  
  101. -  DesktopIcons can be autoLaunched like the NeXT dock.
  102.  
  103. -  Intuitive, practical and nice user-interface:  
  104.     pretty icons and slim palette
  105.  
  106.    You can now forget about the Desktop Window.  The slick-looking palette is 
  107.    all you need to keep around in the Workspace.  It updates you with vital 
  108.    information and allows you to perform functions simply by clicking the 
  109.    buttons.
  110.  
  111. -  More preference options.
  112.    i)  AutoLaunching DesktopIcons can be compulsory or optional.
  113.    ii) Miniaturize Desktop Window upon startup
  114.    iii)Miniaturize Paleete upon startup
  115.  
  116. -  Central password file so that Desktop only needs to be registed once.
  117.  
  118. -  a few bug fixes so that Desktop is getting more robust.
  119.  
  120. Well, I am surprised that so many people are interested in Desktop v1.1.
  121. I hope more suggestions will roll in so that I can make Desktop to be
  122. even better.
