  23. You could have the ftp client on the user's side to all the compression and
  24. decompression. Thereby, the uncompressed version would never be sent over the
  25. net. You could even build a version of an ftp client that looked at the 
  26. filename extensions on the files it was transferring and either automatically
  27. decompress or prompt the user for permission to decompress (a preference).
  28. Then, you could configure it to do any compression/decompression scheme you
  29. wanted by having it do call outs to filter programs. You'd just need a way
  30. to associate an extension with a filter program...
