  18. Sometimes I actually look at file contents. But this thread has gone too
  19. far off, and it's my fault for using the word "hate" carelessly when I
  20. really meant to express a preference. Let me say what I should have said
  21. in the first place:

  23. For examining and installing software I obtain from the net, I *prefer*
  24. Opener.app to Installer.app. Installer has some advantages, particularly
  25. with complicated installs (e.g., TeX) , but most stuff from the net is
  26. not that complicated---just drag the app into the proper folder and
  27. that's it---and Opener has its own advantages. It's a trade-off like
  28. anything else in life; your mileage may vary. IMHO, unless you're using
  29. some fancy GUI ftp tool that automatically untars files, the .pkg
  30. doesn't buy you much---you still have to get the file and untar it into
  31. a .pkg before you can double click to invoke Installer---but what the
  32. heck, it doesn't hurt.

  34. There you are. "prefer A" sounds better than "hate B". I'll be more
  35. careful the next time. And I can get inside the .pkg to find the .tar.Z
  36. or .zip I prefer, so the .pkg doesn't keep me from getting my way. Maybe
  37. I'd be happier if that Receipts problem were solved, but it's really no
  38. big deal.

  41. repeating. :-)
