- Due to budget constraints I am about to order a PS/2 Model 56 with the 486SLC2
- upgrade chip. I currently have a PS/2 Model 70 with an 8514 monitor. I get to
- keep the monitor and card, but must find another cheap computer. Our local
- University computer stores has an apparent bargain. They are offering the
- Model 56 with 4Mb RAM and an 80 Mb hard drive with the 486SLC2 upgrade
- processor for $884. I have talked my boss into letting me go with 4 more Mb
- of RAM for $142 and the Logitech mouse for $69. (The IBM mouse is only $60,
- but I don't like it much.) I am hoping I can get by with the small drive.
- Can anyone out there give me any advice about this purchase? Does anyone use
- Stacker or SuperStore to increase disk space? How much does the compression
- slow everything down. How much would you typically expect to pay for an
- external hard drive on to swap the internal one to increase size? Is there
- a video speed enhancer card, etc. that would help refresh rate? Any and all
- advice would be welcome! By the way, am I right in thinking that this
- processor will be on par with an Intel 486 25 Mhz DX? Is the math coprocessor
- enabled on this processor? E-mail to wferg@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu or
- axibilf@uicvmc.bitnet. Thanks in advance,
- Bill Ferguson
