  15. A few days ago someone asked if the Sony Mini-Disk would be
  16. suitable for PC use. This weekend I came across an article about
  17. the Mini-Disk.

  19. Sony is developing a version of the Mini-Disk (MD) as storage medium
  20. for computer data. They believe the MD will replace the existing
  21. media like floppies and optical disks in a short period of time.

  23. The MD can contain 184 MB of raw data. Formatted it is possible
  24. to store approx. 130 MB, which is far less than a CD-ROM. Access
  25. time and throughput will be higher than conventional optical
  26. discs, because MD can erase and write in a single pass, whereas
  27. conventional optical disks need one revolution for erasing and a
  28. second for writing. Sony claims that a MD can be rewritten over
  29. one million times and it will last as long as a conventional CD.

  31. The MD will be significantly cheaper than a floppy disk: One MD
  32. will cost 10 to 15 US dollars, which brings the price per MB to
  33. approx. 10 cents. A conventional 1.44MB floppy costs about $1 per
  34. MB (at least, here in Holland), which is ten times that of MD.

  36. It will last at least two years before the MD will be widely
  37. available. Sony wants to concentrate on the audio market first
  38. and also wants to make agreements with other manufacturers for a
  39. standard interface for MD.
