- SLIP = Serial Line Internet Protocol. The name pretty much says it all:
- a standard for running IP (as in ARPA/NFS and TCP/IP) over a serial line,
- as opposed to a shared bandwidth LAN (Ethernet/802.3). Because the
- remote system is supported as "just another node" on the network, SLIP
- can provide greater functionality over a dial-up connection than simple
- terminal emulation. Another standard (with perhaps greater performance
- and better usability) for doing the same thing is PPP = Point-to-Point
- Protocol. (PPP also supports very high speed synchronous serial
- connections).
-
- All versions of HP-UX 8.0x include ppl, the "Point-to-Point
- Link", which is an implementation of SLIP. For more information,
- try man ppl or see HP manual 98194-60522 "Using Serial Line IP
- Protocols".
-
- HP does not currently supply an implementation of either CSLIP or
- PPP. (CSLIP = Compressed SLIP; i.e., SLIP with data compresssion,
- which improves performance.)
