- Apologies if this has been suggested before. Last patch I needed for
- VMS was sent electronically to the local office, where a TK50 was cut
- and shipped (yuk). How many of us would object to providing DEC with
- a customer support account to which DEC could "FTP" patches. Simple
- enough to disuser when it isn't needed. (Shipping bug fixes might even
- get automated. :-) This solves the legal issues, and lets DEC's
- customers receive patches in a few minutes, not days. No loss of
- telephone support revenue; just a better service, probably at lower
- overall cost to DEC. (It is rare in my recent experience for the
- system to be out cold for s/w reasons.)
-
- I use the term FTP in a generic way; surely real FTP isn't needed for
- this concept. VMS_SHARE could do the job too in many cases.
-
- The list of known problems is another matter entirely (and one which I
- have little concern about either way). Is this idea too complicated
- for DEC to provide easily?
