  14. Digital is pleased to announce the availability of online, Internet-
  15. accessible product information. The available information spans a
  16. diverse range -- from information sheets, to technical overviews,
  17. performance summaries, brochures, software product descriptions (SPD's),
  18. whitepapers, presentations and even the Systems and Options Catalog.  
  19.  
  20. All information is in either ASCII text or Postscript form. Each
  21. document has an abstract file (.abs) that gives a single paragraph
  22. overview of the document. It also contains the formal document name,
  23. when the document was released and, if in Postscript form, how many
  24. pages of Postscript. 
  25.  
  26. The information hierarchy is divided into a number of subdirectories and
  27. documents are accessible by either anonymous ftp or Email. An index is 
  28. available for each subdirectory. Besides the index file, all other
  29. files carry an extension of:

  31.     .ps    Postscript
  32.     .txt    ASCII Text
  33.     .abs    Abstract
  34.  
  35. Postscript file larger than 75k are also available in a compressed
  36. file format with a .ps.Z extension.

  48. DECnews-PR
  49.     This subdirectory contains all Digital press releases since 8/01/92.
  50.     The press releases are available as ASCII files. These same press
  51.     releases are posted to the biz.dec newsgroup. If you prefer to have
  52.     press releases send to you directly via e-mail, you can send mail 
  53.     to decnews-pr@pa.dec.com with a subject line as follows:

  56. DECnews-UNIX
  57.     This subdirectory contains the full text version of articles 
  58.     referenced by the DECnews for UNIX Newsletter, as well as back issues

  60.     3 weeks and provides capsule summaries of products and services of 
  61.     relevance to the UNIX market. To subscribe to this newsletter, send

  66.     This subdirectory contains all the Digital Systems and Options 
  67.     Catalog (SOC) broken up into smaller files by chapters and/or

  71.     This subdirectory contains all of the Digital Software Product 
  72.     Descriptions (SPD). They are all in ASCII text form.

  74. brochure
  75.     This subdirectory contains various brochures. Brochures are 
  76.     typically available as Postscript files.

  78. document
  79.     This subdirectory contains assorted documents of interest to the
  80.     Digital community - installation guides, compatibility guides,
  81.     porting guides, etc. Most documents are typically in Postscript 
  82.     form.
  83.  
  84. infosheet
  85.     This subdirectory contains product-specific infosheets for both
  86.     software products and hardware platforms. Infosheets are usually
  87.     available in both text and Postscript form.
  88.  
  89. misc
  90.     This subdirectory contains assorted charts, graphics, posters, and
  91.     other graphics that can be used to better visualize and understand
  92.     Digital's products.
  93.  
  94. performance-summary
  95.     This subdirectory contains performance data for both workstation 
  96.     and server products. Performance summaries are typically in 
  97.     Postscript.
  98.  
  99. presentation
  100.     This subdirectory contains commonly used presentations that can 
  101.     be used with a larger group to explain product functionality, 
  102.     position products and describe strategy. Presentation are in 
  103.     Postscript.
  104.  
  105. technical-overview
  106.     This subdirectory contains technical overviews of Digital 
  107.     products, both hardware and software. Technical overviews are 
  108.     in Postscript.

  110. whitepaper
  111.     This subdirectory contains whitepapers on Digital products and 
  112.     generic issues in the computer industry. Whitepapers are in both 
  113.     Postscript and text form.

  116. Internet Access Instructions

  119. All documents are are kept online at gatekeeper.dec.com in the 
  120. /pub/DEC/DECinfo directory.
  121.  
  122. These documents can be accessed electronically by either ftpmail 
  123. or anonymous ftp from gatekeeper.
  124.  
  125. Instructions for using anonymous ftp to copy files:
  126.  
  127.     1. Use the INTERNET application, FTP, to connect to gatekeeper.dec.com.
  128.        (16.1.0.2 is the address if you don't have it defined)
  129.  
  130.     2. Login as user: anonymous
  131.  
  132.     3. Enter a password.  You may use any string as the password, but we
  133.        prefer that you use your e-mail address.
  134.  
  135.     4. Change to the appropriate DECinfo directory; 
  136.        (for example: cd pub/DEC/DECinfo/infosheet)
  137.  
  138.     5. Use the get command to get the file DECnsr V2.0 abstract
  139.        (for example: get decnsr-v2p0.abs)
  140.  
  141.     Note that the username in step 2, the directory in step 4, and the
  142.     filename in step 5 are case sensitive; they must be typed as shown.
  143.     Also, ".txt" must be used instead of " txt" (space txt).

  145. Instructions for using ftpmail to copy files:
  146.  
  147.     1. Address the mail message to ftpmail@gatekeeper.dec.com. 
  148.  
  149.     2. Ignore the subject line.
  150.  
  151.     3. Include in the first line of the body the word "connect".
  152.  
  153.     4. Include get commands for each document required.
  154.     (for example: get /pub/DEC/DECinfo/infosheet/decnsr-v2p0.ps)

  156.     5. The body of a typical request might look like:
