- The version of System 6.0 which I have was the latest from Apple's
- ftp.apple.com. It is the complete five disk set. I haven't tried
- re-installing the system software, but everything else seems to work
- without a glitch.
-
- More on the disk going bad:
-
- The disk does not go bad on the //gs. It is when I try using the disk
- on a Macintosh again (such as a IIfx or an SE or the IIci we have at
- work) that it shows as being a bad disk. I can no longer read the disk
- and, in fact, get the "Disk unreadable. Eject, Format, etc..." message.
- The first time this happened was on a disk which didn't have anything
- important. I thought it was just the diskette. The second time was
- on a fairly important disk (My wedding information diskette with everyone's
- names on it.).
-
- Since I clean the drives every month I didn't think the disk drives were
- dirty but I cleaned them anyway. No visible dirt - maybe microscopic? ;)
-
- Both diskettes have the same problem. Track $10 (16) has been clobbered.
- I'm not sure about the Mac diskettes, but I believe track $10 is the main
- catalog track. On the //e (the beautiful //e! :) ) I wrote a small disk
- dump program which reads a track and dumps it to a disk as a file. This
- is how I recovered the other disk. This diskette is rather important
- because it contains information we might need for a court case.
-
- Thanks so far to everyone who has offered ideas. I'll give them a try to
- see what happens and let everyone know. :)
