- :)Does anyone know if an implementation of the utility "wbak" does exist
- :)for non-apollo workstations (e.g. sun) or is it possible to get the
- :)source code for implementing it on my own? Any information about the
- :)internal data format would be of interest, too.
-
- I don't believe (or haven't heard of) anyone is planning to continue the
- wbak program, however HP has claimed that they would be coming out with
- an rbak for HP-UX machines to read Apollo wbak/rbak format tapes. HP
- will most likely support the same medias they have all along; QIC, 4mm
- DAT, and 9 track. Unfortunately HP never saw 8mm as an option, whereas
- our site relies on them quite heavily.
-
- Am I upset that HP won't have a product to allow me to read my years
- worth of archives and backups? No, because a company known as
- Workstation Solutions in Nashua NH has a similar product (rbak for Unix)
- which will read 8mm plus all the other medias that HP supports. Chances
- are when our last few Domain/OS machines go down for the count we will
- be purchasing this software to be able to restore our data and perhaps
- rewrite it in a more current format.
-
- I believe WS is coming out with rbak for HP-UX (since that will be our
- primary target platform as we transition away from Domain/OS), however
- they are targeting other platforms with their products and it wouldn't
- surprise me if they also had a version for the Sun, IBM, and DEC
- platforms.
