I have a problem with the font preferences in WB. Could someone please help?

Although I have a lot of fonts copied to my fonts: directory (assigned to
DH0:fonts), all of them are not recognized or cannot be opened when I click
the font icon in preferences - for example I do not managed to set the
system font to times. I think that the only readable is topaz 8, the rest
are either too big to fit 80 characters on a line or too small to be displayed
clearly in a non-interlaced monitor. And I think even the WB 1.3 system font
looks nicer than topaz 8. How can I get preferences recognize also other
fonts? The IBM fonts (do not remember where I have got them, possibly from
Term) looks nice - and are even recognized, but they follow the MS-DOS enc-
oding, thus making them unusuable in scandinavia.
Observe that my monitor flickers with interlacing, it is the cheapest possible
Philips, so I generally use it in non-interlace mode.
