-
- I bought one. (4megs + 120Megs drive).
-
- I am VERY satified with it. I'll sum up the pro and cons:
-
- pro:
- + a dream to set up and install. very troublefree running afterwards.
- + high performance (I can upload an AIBB module or perform tests). basically
- faster than a A3000 except for graphics. Faster than the 4000 on the sieve
- test. slower on math since I don't have a FPU (optional). F1GP seems to run
- as fast as on a A3000. Wing commander is ultra-smooth (~20 fps?).
- + you can turn off the power supply and your amiga can then run in 68000
- (great when you don't want the noise while playing non-HD installable games
- which don't need 030 power, such as Bill's tomato game)
- + separate power supply, useful for old A500 with junk PSUs.
- + neat look.
- + optional FPU and mini-slot (for a PC AT emulator presently)
-
- con:
- - NOISY!!! (the fan can be quieted by adding diods (4) to it, just like the
- 2000's fan), but the drive itself (Maxtor) is too noisy for a home
- environment. I built some kind of housing in polystyrene and now it is is Ok.
- - you cannot use only the 68030 or HD, you have to disconnect both. :-(
- - No MMU, although you can yourself plug a fulll 40Mhz 68030 if you need
- - only expandable to 8megs of ram, if this is important.
-
- So, If you buy it you wont be disapointed. However buying the new derringer or
- vector accelerators + an HD may be a better choice, if the ability to run
- either the HD or the 68030, or a quiter operation are important to you.
- Personnaly It serves me well, I will eventually buy an AGA machine near the end
- of this year (or the rumor of GVP making an AGA card for their mini slot might
- revel as real, but I don't beleive it). You may better off trying to find an
- used or discounted A3000, though... for be the ability to fall back to 68000
- was important for old games, but since A3000 seem to be very cheap in the US
- you may as well keep your A500 and buy an A3000 for the total cost of the
- A530... Here in france used A3000 are still VERY expensive, so...
