- Thanks for your replies to my comments on printer drivers. Perhaps my comments
- were a little harsh and un-called for. I'm not critisising the way Acorn have
- implemented their printer drivers (I think that this is one of the best
- features of RISC OS !), I just think that Acorn should put more effort into
- producing and supporting their printer drivers.
-
- For example, Panasonic have a fairly large market share of the printer market
- in the UK and abroad. However there is not a single printer driver supplied
- with RISC OS 3 that has the name of a Panasonic printer. We 'techies' can
- probably quess that an Epson LQ-850 driver will work with a Panasonic 1124
- printer. However this is not obvious to many people - the sort of people that
- use computers occasionally for odd bits of word processing - i.e. the
- majority of computer users. If the Archimedes is to have any hope of becomming
- aq mass market machine, then this is the market that Acorn must target.
-
- If it is so simple to create a printer driver, then this makes Acorn's 'crime'
- even worse. If the driver for the 1124 is the same as the LQ-850 then why
- doesn't Acorn simply copy it and rename it P1124, and supply it on a disc of
- printer drivers.
-
- Incidentally I use the excellent Laser Direct printer with Impression for
- word-processing. However, even this requires some knowledge to avoid
- problems with rotated fonts, memory constraints etc.
