- The "spash screen" does NOT add to the startup time. It is put up
- at the beginning of MATLAB's initialization and taken down
- at the end.

- It's actually used by the GUI widget set to figure out the size
- of the borders on the window manager that you are using so that
- the window can be positioned accurately. X allows you to use
- a window manager of your choice and we do not know this ahead
- of time.
