  24. The "spash screen" does NOT add to the startup time. It is put up
  25. at the beginning of MATLAB's initialization and taken down
  26. at the end.

  28. It's actually used by the GUI widget set to figure out the size
  29. of the borders on the window manager that you are using so that
  30. the window can be positioned accurately.  X allows you to use 
  31. a window manager of your choice and we do not know this ahead
  32. of time.
