  17. the 4.8.3 implementation allows these decimal-like numbers _everywhere_,
  18. not just in serial numbers.  in 4.9 they will be accepted only for serial
  19. numbers and the decimal interpretation will be a compile-time option 
  20. (shipped "enabled" by default).
