  23. Telecommunications networks, together with the end systems that use them, are
  24. distributed systems that are moving to more open architectures just as
  25. computing systems have.  Different entities, controlling resources and
  26. offering services, negotiate and cooperate to achieve desired goals for
  27. rapid service creation and deployment, performance and fairness.  This Special
  28. Issue seeks articles describing the distributed computing environments
  29. underlying these new architectures, tools and subsystems such as ANSA modules
  30. and simulation packages, architectural initiatives such as INA and TINA,
  31. descriptions of field experience, and architectural considerations for network
  32. signalling, resources management, recovery, and administration generally.
  33. Specific topics might include, beyond those already indicated,
  34.  
  35. - Telecommunication Management Network (TMN) concepts and progress toward
  36.    integrating them with intelligent network concepts.
  37. - New call models to support more sophisticated multimedia communications.
  38. - Federation issues (providing a service across more than one administrative
  39.    domain, at various levels).
  40. - Service creation environments beyond telephony.
  41. - Extended forms of directory systems.
  42. - Comparisons of Internet and public network architectures, from both service
  43.   and management perspectives.

  45. Case study experiences including lab and field trials are also solicited.
