- If a modem/serial card without a 16550 UART is used, do problems exist?

- I understand that the UART buffers the data, but without this, will things just
- work a little slower or will data be dropped?

- Is there a break-even point, say 9600 baud without a 16550 is okay, but beyond
- that one is really necessary?
