- When installing the 2.1 beta, the install process simply hung after loading
- about 5 or 6 files from disk 13. The drive just stopped spinning. I sat and
- waited for several minutes and nothing happened. I sometimes think that the
- programmers who wrote the installation program at IBM really wish they were
- writing adventure game software. Every time I install OS/2, it is a unique
- adventure!
-
- I did not want to CTRL-ALT-DEL, so I started poking at the keys to see if I
- could get the install program to continue. When I pressed F3 (if I recall
- correctly), an OS/2 window popped up. I found a secret door!
-
- I ran a chkdsk on the drive where the install was taking place and chkdsk
- reported that the last file loaded was corrupted. Sigh! Why couldn't the
- install program report this problem? It knew it had a problem when it decided
- to stop copying files from the A drive to the hard disk.
-
- When I tried the install again, it stopped again at the exact same file on
- disk 13. So, now I concluded that the disk image was bad. So, I rebuilt that
- disk from the CD-ROM again and did the install a third time. This time it
- completed successfully.
-
- If IBM does not do something to improve the installation program with
- intelligent error detection and reporting, OS/2 will die due to user
- frustration, not because of anything fundamentally wrong with the operating
- system.
