- Well, the apps are starting to show up. I was at the Windows & OS/2
- Conference yesterday (San Jose, CA) and IBM had the largest presence at
- the show, all hyping OS/2. They had one booth full of ISV's
- demonstrating their apps and most of them were '32-bit' according
- to the vendors. IBM also had a booth specifically for vendors, a
- training area, and a test-drive area where you could actually try out
- some of the new OS/2 2.x apps. The biggest name vendor showing a
- 32-bit OS/2 2.x app was WordPerfect - WP 5.2 for OS/2 was being
- shown publically for the first time.
-
- The best demo of the relative capabilities of OS/2 vs. Win 3.1 was
- a side-by-side run by IBM. Purpose of the demo was to show the
- advantage of pre-emptive multitasking over cooperative multitasking.
- The demo was done on 2 identical IBM PS/2 Model 57's. Running was
- a DOS box running the DOS backup command, a Windows box running an
- Excel macro, and 'multimedia' app (a Win 3.1 one under windows - I
- forget the vendor - and IBM's Ultimedia on OS/2 2.1 beta). The
- backup was started, then the Excel macro, and finally the multimedia
- app (video+sound). Well, everything ran smoothly on the OS/2 machine,
- while the Windows machine jerked and stammered through the demo.
- Unfortunately they did not allow us to look at the 'settings' used
- which can, of course, have a large affect on such things.
-
- I do have to give IBM credit for 2 things at this show: first, there
- was an inordinate amount of self-deprecating humour (referring
- frequently to the news on Wednesday of the huge FY losses racked up
- by Big Blue). Second, I have to give them the 'stainless steel
- balls' award for using only the 2.1 beta of OS/2 and actually letting
- folks run it in the test-drive area.
-
- For comparison, the ONLY presence for NT was in the rather small
- MS booth, and no one except the demonstrator was permitted to
- touch the sacrosanct machines (fear of users seeing it crash?).
