  14. Yes, I know, this is unsolicited, but these things have been gnawing at
  15. me.

  17. * a "nice" command [or some way of increasing or decreasing command
  18. priorities] .. this would be handy for cron and background tasks in
  19. general.. so a backup called from cron doesn't slow the whole system to
  20. a crawl [hypothetical.. I don't have another drive in which to back
  21. MINIX upon!]

  23. * faster i/o.  anything that goes to stderr seems to run much slower
  24. than the rest of the text..  I have heard vague and unconfirmed rumors
  25. about an "enhanced" stdio program which speeds reads & writes up a bit,
  26. but, given my luck, it won't work on MacMINIX.  Also, why do exec and
  27. system calls take so long to execute the program?  Even with both
  28. absolute filenames and caching, it still takes a long time.. why?

  32. code to go with it.  Is this coming soon?  I dearly hope so.  My Mac has

  35. These shouldn't be interpreted as flames [grr.. I hate MINIX.. shoulda
  36. never got the thing.. grr..] ... I *like* MINIX.  It is a great learning
  37. platform, plus it is far more inexpensive than MachTEN or A/UX, and
  38. requires fewer resources.

  40. I know what you're going to say.. "You've got the source, fix it
  41. yourself!"  I knew about { } much of C before I got MINIX, and I'm still
  42. learning... someday, perhaps you will see my contributions on your
  43. favourite FTP site.. but not anytime soon.
