- In this month's Computer Shopper (Feb. '93) there's an ad for
- a FastMicro 486 DX/33 Mhz PC. It includes a 212 Mb Connor IDE hard
- drive, 8 Meg RAM, a 486 w/ 8k internal cache, 128K external static
- write-back cache, and the monitor is 14" 1024x768 @72Hz SVGA. The
- price is $1999, which I thought was a good deal, especially since it
- includes 2 choices of software packages + Windows, Microsoft mouse,
- 1.2 + 1.44M floppy drives, 2 serial ports, parallel port, game port,
- etc. It also has local bus video, which brings me to my question:
-
- I want to run Linux on this machine. I know 8 Meg of memory
- should be sufficient, and I should have enough disk space. My question:
- Is the video card Linux-compatible? It's advertised as a VESA Local
- Bus video card with Windows accelerator, and nothing more is said.
- I know local bus video should be a plus point, but if I am unable to
- run Linux+X11 at SVGA resolution, I'd rather not buy this PC. I
- haven't seen this video card on the hardware compatibility list
- either.
-
- If anyone can tell me for certain whether this machine will
- run Linux/X11, it would help me greatly. It sounds like a great Unix
- machine otherwise. Thanks for any help.
-
- If you post an answer, make sure to mail me a copy - I might
- miss it in this really high-volume newsgroup.
