- Problems, problems, problems
-
- Hi
-
- I'm a relative Unix newbie - although I have used DEC Ultrix and SG Irix
- systems. I just recently found out that there are these two free implementaions
- of Unix for 386s and above: 386bsd and Linux.
-
- I have been _trying_ to install Linux via SLS (any of the series, starting with
- the 'a' series of course). I think that I first got 0.99p2 and have since found
- out that there were problems ++ with that. So I downloaded again (from
- sunsite.unc.edu because the Australian mirror at kirk.bu.oz.au has garbled
- files).
-
- This time the installation process got as far as getting me to logging in -
- i.e. it thinks that it has installed all the packages on disks a1 to a4 (and it
- took some time to do this - so I am not talking about the earlier problem that
- I and other people faced of 'doinstall' not actually doing anything with the
- installation disks). However, it will not accept 'root' as a login!
-
- There might be some problem with the login directory - as there are a series of
- error messages about them - but how can I do anything about them? Re-installing
- does _not_ help.
-
- (Is 386bsd less hazardous to install?)
