- Hi netters, Linux-ers and Unix-gurus,
-
- Well, I was finally tempted to
- install Linux, after talking to a friend who was using it. BUT.....I am
- no Unix - freak!! This is my FIRST experience with any kind of Unix. I
- have worked on Unix machines before but never done any administration.
- And now here I am stuck half way through installing Linux!!
-
- I would really really appreciate it is some one would help me out of
- this mess!! Preferable like walk me through it!! I could initiate a talk
- from my roomies Mac and work on my machine trying out all the stuff.
- That would be really great as I can only doe all this over the weekend.
- Weekdays..boy just too much work.
-
- Well here what I have and how far I have got...
-
- intel 486DX33
- 8 MB RAM
- 125 MB HDD IDE(using 100 for Linux and 25 for DOS)
- 1x5 1/4" 1.2 MB
- 1x3 1/2" 1.44MB
- Diamond SpeedStar Plus graphics card (God only knows which chipset that is!?)
- 14" 265 color 1024x768 SVGA monitor
- SMC WD8003 Ethernet card.
- Sound Blaster Pro 2.0
-
- Okay so that's what I have and this is where I got....
-
- I managed to ftp off all the disks for linux as in the
- /pub/linux/packages/SLS directory on tsx-11.mit.edu
-
- The a1 and a2 disks work.
- The fdisk and the mkefs worked OK. The doinstall proceeded well with
- only one error .....something about small....something....it said file
- exists. But the installation proceeded OK.
- Managed to boot from the boot floppy and change the passwd for root.
-
- Now I am stuck here.....
-
- LILO.....whatever that is...firstly it wasn't in the directory /usr/src
- but was in /etc/...something else..well I found it but can't make head
- or tail out f it. All I want to do is boot from the HDD now. Well my
- partition info is ....hda1(25 MB) DOS and hda2(100MB) Linux extfs. So
- please tell me how to go about doing this.
-
- Then TCP/IP.....I am at CMU and have a direct link to internet with my
- IP address as 128.2.111.51, I want to use the CMU
- nameserver....Nameserver.andrew.cmu.edu as the name server for my
- machine also. I don't understand what is meant ny hostname...is it my
- machine name, it's IP name or the name of the machine I want to connect
- to on Andrew. Infact I don't quite get how to go about setting the
- config for a simple telnet into my network!!
-
- Then X....when I try running iit, the mouse llokup fails...saying no
- such file or directory and even the video is not configured properly. I
- have a Diamond Speedstar Plus....I don't know what chipset is on it...or
- how toget the clock rate etc. HELP!!
-
- Well if I get this far then I might try moving a step further!!
-
- Thanks for all the help in advance. you can either e-mail me at
- sneaker@cmu.edu or finger to see which machine I am on and then initiate
- a talk. Please Help!!
-
- Thanks
- Manu
