  27. LISA is the System Administration conference for USENIX. SAGE is the
  28. System Adminstrators' Guild, a STG (Special Technical Group) of USENIX.
  29. SAGE's mission is to advance/promote the profession of systems' adminstration,
  30. looking at and beyond the scope of a technical conference like LISA to
  31. issues like careers, management, education, certification, ethics, etc.
  32. SAGE will probably be very involved in attempting to maintain the high
  33. quality of the LISA conferences and any other efforts of a similar nature.

  35. SANS (System Adminstration, Networking, and Security) is the renamed
  36. World Conference on System Administration and Security
  37. from last July.  It is principly sponsored by FedUNIX, a Washington, D.C.,
  38. based group.
  39.  
  40. SAGE is also co-sponsoring SANS this year, working with the World Conference
  41. group to promote cooperation and interchange between their group and USENIX,
  42. and to bring together two groups aiming at different segments of the
  43. system adminstration profession.

  45. I went to both conferences last year, and was a member of the interim board
  46. of SAGE.  Each has its benefits.  SAGE is not a conference, but an
  47. ongoing support effort, aimed at improving our field as it begins to expand 
  48. quickly.  I think it is an excellent effort and would encourage anyone to join.
  49. SANS and LISA are differnet on focus and other mundane things, like time
  50. and location, and which one you attend, if you can only attend one, depends
  51. a lot on what you want out of the conference.
