  20. These comments (and the rest of Christopher's posting) provide an example 
  21. of the most ludicrous pseudo-intellectual claptrap I have read in a long
  22. while. 
  23. His argument in essence is that every creative effort is predicated on a
  24. series of 
  25. earlier efforts which are appropriated. Thus, for example, U2 needed to
  26. rely on 
  27. (or appropriate) pre-existing creative products such as the English
  28. language, 
  29. instrumentation, harmony, song structure (these are Christoper╒s examples).

  31. The creator, in his view, has simply provided an ╥endpoint╙ in the flow of
  32. history.

  34. The problem is, that no one else wrote Achtung Baby -- only U2 did.  Many
  35. folks 
  36. have a working knowledge of the English language, harmony, instrumentation,
  37.  
  38. song structure, etc. but they didn╒t write The Joshua Tree, or whatever
  39. U2╒s 
  40. previous album was called.

  42. Christopher╒s argument calls to mind a vision of some guy sitting back in
  43. his 
  44. recliner saying ╥I cudda done that!╙.  I know it sounds awful elitist and
  45. it╒s probably 
  46. not PC, but some people just have more creative talent than others!  U2 was
  47. able to 
  48. synthesize an amazing variety of musical, social, historical, lyrical,
  49. political, etc. 
  50. influences into their music and they deserve the right as artists and
  51. creators to 
  52. say - this is ours!
