  18. I recently tried out the MediaVision AudioPort on a Compaq notebook (not
  19. sure which model - it wasn't mine). Here is what I found:

  21. 1. Although they claim SoundBlaster compatibility in a DOS window,
  22.    I couldn't get this to work.

  24. 2. Just to make sure it worked, I used its driver under Winodws to play
  25.    a couple of standard sounds. This worked fine (although I wouldn't
  26.    call this an exhaustive test of its functionality).

  28. 3. It's programmer's toolkit is somewhat thin (compared to that of the
  29.    PAS or the SB) and, since it works off the parallel port, its
  30.    interface looks NOTHING like those of the SB and PAS boards, with
  31.    DMA, etc. 
  32.    Nobody has said anything to me about this, but I'm sure that they'll
  33.    be supplying better tools for development sometime in the future.

  35. I guess it depends on your requirements. If you are looking for a sound
  36. board for Windows, this might work. If you are looking for SB compatibility,
  37. you may be disappointed.

  39. Creative Labs has a new product that works off the parallel port, much like
  40. this does.

  42. BTW, for my needs, we got a Compaq LITE 386/25 (I think) and its expansion
  43. box, and put a SoundBlaster right in it. Worked fine.
