  35.                  *** What is STIS? ***
  36.  
  37.      STIS is an electronic dissemination system that provides fast,
  38. easy access to National Science Foundation (NSF) publications.
  39. There is no cost to you except for possible long-distance phone
  40. charges.  The service is available 24 hours a day, except for brief
  41. weekly maintenance periods.

  43.         *** What Publications are Available? ***

  45.      Publications currently available include:

  47.      *  The NSF Bulletin
  48.      *  Program announcements and "Dear Colleague" letters
  49.      *  General publications and reports
  50.      *  Press releases
  51.      *  NSF organization charts and phone books
  52.      *  NSF vacancy announcements
  53.      *  Award abstracts (1989-now)

  55.                 *** Access Methods ***
  56.  
  57.      There are many ways to access STIS.  Choose the method
  58. that meets your needs and the communication facilities you have
  59. available.

  61. The Internet Gopher.  If your campus supports a Gopher client, this is
  62. the easiest way to access STIS documents.
  63.  
  64. Electronic Documents Via E-Mail.  If you have access to
  65. Internet or BITNET e-mail, you can send a specially formatted
  66. message, and the document you request will be automatically
  67. returned to you via e-mail.
  68.  
  69. Anonymous FTP.  Internet users who are familiar with this file
  70. transfer method can quickly and easily transfer STIS documents
  71. to their local system for browsing and printing.
  72.  
  73. WAIS (Wide Area Information Servers).  WAIS is a distributed text
  74. search and retrieval system available to many Internet users.
  75.  
  76. On-Line STIS.  If you have a VT100 emulator and an Internet
  77. connection or a modem, you can log on to the on-line system.
  78. The on-line system features full-text search and retrieval software
  79. to help you locate the documents and award abstracts that are of
  80. interest to you.  Once you locate a document, you can browse
  81. through it on-line or download it using the Kermit protocol or
  82. request that it be mailed to you.

  84. Direct E-Mail.  You can request that STIS E-mail you a weekly
  85. summary of all the new documents on STIS.  You can also sign
  86. up to get the full text of all documents added to STIS.

  90. The following sections tell how to get started with each of the access
  91. methods described above:

  93. Internet Gopher
  94.  
  95. You must be on the Internet to use Gopher.  If you are on the Internet,
  96. and your campus doesn't support Gopher, encourage your network
  97. administrator to install Gopher clients.  If you have a Gopher client,
  98. ask your administrator to include STIS in it.  Our server is on host
  99. "stis.nsf.gov" on port 70.

  101. Documents Via E-Mail
  102.  
  103. Send a message to stisserv@nsf.gov (Internet) or
  104. stisserv@NSF (BITNET).  The text of the message should be as
  105. follows (the Subject line is ignored):

  109. You will receive a list of all the documents on STIS and
  110. instructions for retrieving them.  Please note that all requests for
  111. electronic documents should be sent to stisserv, as shown above.
  112. Requests for printed publications should be sent to pubs@nsf.gov
  113. (Internet) or pubs@NSF (BITNET).

  115. Anonymous FTP
  116.  
  117. FTP to stis.nsf.gov.  If you cannot connect, try
  118. 128.150.195.40.  Enter anonymous for the username, and your E-
  119. mail address for the password.  Retrieve the file "index".  This
  120. file contains a list of the files available on STIS and additional
  121. instructions.
  122.  
  123. WAIS
  124.  
  125. The NSF WAIS server is stis.nsf.gov (128.150.195.40).  You can
  126. get the ".src" file from the "Directory of Servers" at
  127. quake.think.com.
  128.  
  129. The On-Line System
  130.  
  131. If you are on the Internet: telnet stis.nsf.gov.  If you cannot
  132. connect, try telnet 128.150.195.40.  At the login prompt, enter
  133. "public".
  134.  
  135. If you are dialing in with a modem:  Choose 1200, 2400, or
  136. 9600 baud, 7-E-1.  Dial 202-357-0359 or 202-357-0360.  When
  137. connected, press Enter.  At the login prompt, enter public.
  138.  
  139. The on-line system uses a powerful text search and retrieval
  140. system called TOPIC.  If you are not familiar with TOPIC, you will
  141. want to obtain a copy of the STIS User's Guide, NSF 91-19.  You can
  142. request an electronic copy after you log on.  For a printed copy, send
  143. your mailing address to "stis@nsf.gov" (Internet) or "stis@NSF"
  144. (BITNET).
